Readers & Writers is a New York City-based organization whose mission is to promote literacy and appreciation of quality literature among underserved communities, with a special focus on children and first-generation immigrants. We use a grassroots, community-based approach to connect writers with readers and develop new audiences for upcoming, promising, and under-recognized writers.
Our current programs include:
Word Up / Children's Verse Project: commissions writers who have never written children's literature to write children's poems.
Serial Thriller: serial readings of new, unpublished children's novels in grassroots venues.
The Portable Theater Project: new commissioned plays and multi-media poetry performances that can easily be brought into grassroots community venues.
